Declaring Pre-Health

The Office of Pre-Health Advising serves all undergraduate students at Syracuse University.

To be officially assigned to a Pre-Health advisor students must meet eligibility requirements:

  • Declare a major
  • Complete three full semesters at Syracuse University. Transfers students need to complete one semester.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credits of biology, chemistry, physics, or math coursework with a minimum 2.8 GPA.

Students submit their Pre-Health Declaration in MySlice under the eForms tab.

Students with declared majors in the College of Arts and Sciences who declare pre-health will be assigned a pre-health advisor in January of their sophomore year. They will be notified by email that their advisor has changed. Their pre-health advisor serves as an academic/career advisor and is responsible for assisting with registration, processing university forms, and graduation requirements in addition to pre-health advising.

Students in other schools or colleges at Syracuse University who declare pre-health will be assigned to a pre-health advisor who will serve as a supplemental advisor focusing on pre-health requirements only.

Maintaining Pre-Health

To maintain their pre-health declaration students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and science GPA of 2.8. If a student drops below these requirements, they receive a pre-health warning and are required to meet with their pre-health advisor to discuss a success plan. After one semester if their cumulative and science GPA do not meet requirements then they are removed from pre-health advising and reassigned to another academic and career advisor.
