Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field of biology encompassing the development, function, chemistry, and pathology of the peripheral and central nervous systems. Neurobiologists in the Department of Biology at Syracuse University examine aspects of this field at the sub-cellular, cellular, systems, and whole organism levels. Research in the department applies molecular, biochemical, pharmacologic and genetic tools, as well as microscopic imaging and transgenetic technology in cell/tissue culture and in mammalian and non-mammalian animal models. Faculty research interests are relevant for understanding patterning of the nervous system, neuroplasticity of the brain, as well as neurological diseases including stress, age-related memory impairment, epilepsy, stroke, and autism-spectrum disorders.

Biology faculty are part of a larger Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program. The educational and scientific environment of students in the Biology department at Syracuse University is further enriched by a close collaborative relationships with the Departments of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the adjacent campus of SUNY Upstate Medical University.
