The Department of African American Studies mourns the passing of Ralphaline (Rae) A. Banks, Ph.D., who joined the ancestors on July 10, 2023. Professor Banks was trained as a sociologist, and was an excellent instructor who offered courses about race, inequality and the Black experience during her years within the department. Known also for her commitment to student learning, growth and development, Banks actively supported the undergraduate student population. She will be missed by not only AAS faculty, staff and students, but also the overall Syracuse University community. We pray for her family and wish them the best in this period of grieving.
