Himika Bhattacharya’s research and teaching interests include Transnational Feminist Studies focusing on Women of Color and Dalit Feminisms; Qualitative Research Methods particularly Ethnography and Oral History; and South Asia Studies, specifically India. Her interdisciplinary research engages questions about caste and race; violence and resistance and, love and solidarity. She is an affiliate faculty of the South Asia Center and regularly teaches courses which fulfill the South Asian Studies minor. She is also a member of the Democratizing Knowledge collective at SU.

Her first book, forthcoming (2017) with Rutgers University Press, is titled Narrating Love and Violence: Women Contesting Caste, Tribe and State in Lahaul, India, and combines ethnography, oral history and narrative writing to demonstrate how community, state, and media discourses of gendered violence in India not only build upon colonial and colonizing knowledges of social identities, but infact serve as proxy for caste. Her other writings on gender and caste violence, ethnography, and social movements in India can be found in Meridians; Qualitative Inquiry; Feminist Formations; The Handbook of Emergent Methods; The Encyclopedia of Qualitative Research & Kafila.
