Teri Freitas Gorman, a communications professional with more than two decades of executive-level experience, is coming to Syracuse University to discuss the role of intercultural communications in arts leadership. Her lecture is Monday morning, Oct. 22, at La Casita Cultural Center (109 Otisco St., Syracuse).

The event is presented by and for the Janklow Arts Leadership Program in The College of Arts and Sciences. For more information, contact 315-443-0367.

“We are honored to present Teri Gorman, who is one of the leading lights in intercultural communications and public affairs,” says Mark Nerenhausen, the Janklow Program’s professor of practice and founding director. “She will talk extensively about organizational positioning, reputation management, strategic communications, and stakeholder relations, all within an arts leadership framework.”

Gorman is a partner at two Hawaiian companies: E Ola Pono, which provides cultural advisory services to the state’s hospitality, development, and government sectors; and Ipuka Holdings, which specializes in cultural tourism activities.  Most of her work involves public affairs, intercultural communications, government and media relations, and executive orientation to Hawaii.

Previously, Gorman held leadership positions at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale (Florida), and the Aotea Centre in Auckland (New Zealand).

In 1999, Nerenhausen, then president and CEO of the Broward Center, hired Gorman to serve as vice president for external relations. “Terri helped us adapt to changing market conditions, while keeping our brand fresh and relevant,” he says. “Among her many accomplishments were the creation of a cultural tourism marketing initiative, resulting in measurable increases in foot traffic, retail sales, and hotel room nights throughout the city; and the development of an award-winning business and cultural partnership between the State of Florida and the city of São Paulo [Brazil].”

Gorman has also served as Maui’s commissioner to the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and has lectured extensively on marketing communications at Stanford University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in film and television from the University of California, Los Angeles, before launching her career in the Netherlands as a sports publicist. Gorman eventually returned to her native Hawaii, where she continued to work in public relations.

The Janklow Program is a master's-level professional training program for arts leaders and entrepreneurs. It is housed in The College's Department of Art and Music Histories.
