In Fall 2021, the Department of Mathematics introduced a new major in statistics, available at two levels: bachelor of arts and bachelor of science.

A bachelor’s degree in statistics provides students with fundamental knowledge and skills related to probability, mathematical statistics, data analysis and statistical computing. With the dramatic growth of big data, data science, and analytics, a degree in statistics can qualify them for a career in many areas, including business, economics, medicine, epidemiology, agriculture, environmental sciences, sports and all aspects of government. U.S. News and World Report ranks statistician among the best STEM jobs in the U.S.
The number of Syracuse University statistics majors recently reached 20 and continues to grow. As a part of the new program, the department added several advanced courses in statistics:

  • Statistical Computing
  • Regression Analysis
  • Analysis of Variance and Experimental Design
  • Introduction to Bayesian Statistics
  • Statistics Seminar

Professor Hyune-Ju Kim advises the students majoring in statistics. The department also launched a Statistics and Data Science student chapter of the American Statistical Association, advised by Professor Jianxuan Liu.
The statistics faculty group is also growing with the addition of Rachana Maharjan, who joins the department in Fall 2023 as a new assistant teaching professor.
