The Department of Mathematics recently became an academic sponsor of the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath, formerly MSRI). This sponsorship provides the department with access to many undergraduate/graduate training and faculty research programs.

SLMath, located in Berkeley, California, is one of the world’s preeminent centers for research in the mathematical sciences and has been advancing knowledge through mathematical research since 1982. It serves the mathematical community through its topic-focused programs and workshops, and the general public via their national and global outreach initiatives.

Through the sponsorship, mathematics graduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) will travel to SLMath/MSRI summer schools. The Institute will support up to four graduate students per year, under some restrictions, to attend summer schools on an array of mathematical topics including statistics and computer science. They are held at MSRI in Berkeley and at other locations around the world.

According to Graham Leuschke, professor and chair of mathematics in A&S, the department has already sent the first round of students to these summer schools in 2023, on “Commutative Algebra and its Interaction with Algebraic Geometry,” “Topics in Geometric Flows and Minimal Surfaces,” and “Introduction to Derived Algebraic Geometry.”

About SLMath/MSRI:

SLMath/MSRI brings foremost mathematical scientists from around the world to work together in an environment that promotes creativity and effective collaboration. The Institute works for inclusiveness, and has many programs designed to enhance the participation of women and individuals from underrepresented groups.
