A&S | Maxwell Academic and Career Advising’s International Student Success Model, which supports international students through targeted programming, was recently featured on Spectrum News. Developed by Steve Schaffling, assistant dean of student success, and Ling Gao LeBeau, director of international student success, in the A&S | Maxwell Office of Academic and Career Advising, the model was recognized with the 2024 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award for Campus Internationalization by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

Speaking with Spectrum about the model, Schaffling said the idea is to ease the transition for international students coming to Syracuse University. "When they get here, we have a specifically designed peer mentor program for international students that follows an academic model and what I mean by that is that we plan out for the mentors and the mentees, what are the topics that they should be engaging on over the course of their first semester."
