Silvio Torres-Saillant, Dean's Professor of English, was quoted in a National Association of Hispanic Journalists news article titled, "Digital ‘nomads’ seek paradise in beachfront Dominican town, hurt local economy." The story highlighted the recent trend of digital nomads - or people who work remotely - moving to the Dominican Republic and driving up prices.

Torres-Saillant, who is Dominican-born, says that tourism development and foreign investment do not necessarily “contribute to enhancing the quality of social relations,” as many locals are still paid low wages keeping those towns in systemic poverty. The article was featured in over 30 news outlets around the U.S., including Syracuse.com, NJ.com, The Oregonian and Cleveland.com.
