There is nothing like the excitement and anticipation as the new academic year begins. Whether you are a new or returning student or faculty member, the possibilities and potential for the coming months are energizing.

Did you know that new deans feel that way too? They do!

To introduce myself, I am Behzad Mortazavi, and I started as your dean on July 1. Like our new students, faculty and staff, I’ve been learning as much as I can about our campus and community by “getting out and about,” and meeting so many of you already.

I’m impressed by the range of events and special offerings in A&S. The following are some upcoming items on my agenda. Are any on yours?

I’m proud to be part of the College of Arts and Sciences. You can learn more about me and why I feel that way in this recent Q&A. I look forward to working with you all as I get up to speed this semester.

In closing, I’d like to acknowledge four individuals whose invaluable contributions have made my transition here incredibly smooth.

First, I thank outgoing associate deans Kishi Animashaun Ducre and Alan Middleton for their years of service and dedication to A&S on the Dean’s Cabinet. I invite you to read about their accomplishments here.

Second, I extend special thanks to Lois Agnew, who ably steered the College during the last year, and to former dean Karin Ruhlandt, who cemented A&S as a premier liberal arts hub in this great R1 university. I have impressive shoes to fill!
