Biographical Information

Irish/Australian saxophonist Daniel Rorke has lived and worked in Ireland, Australia,  Iceland, Norway, The United Kingdom, and now resides in New York. He also holds a PhD from the University of New England, and received a Bachelor in Jazz Performance with first class honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a Masters in Jazz Performance at NTNU Jazzlinja in Trondheim.

His music has been described as "kaleidoscopic" by reviewer Eyal Hareuveni and “warm, sparse, compelling” by John O’Brien of RTRFM, and Rorke himself "A heavyweight... a full-blooded performer" (Lasse Haugen - Jazznytt 2011) with "Surprising control and discipline" (Lars Mossefin - Dag og Tid Newspaper).

He was previously Lecturer in Music at the Newpark Music Centre (Now Dublin City University) Bachelor of Jazz Programme and the Berklee School of Music Track Programme, Ireland's premier institution for the study of Jazz and improvised music. Currently he teaches at Syracuse University in upstate New York in the Department of Art and Music Histories.

Rorke has studied both performance and composition extensively, learning from some well known artists such as Jerry Bergonzi, Kenny Werner, Terje Bjørklund, Henning Sommerø, Victor Morosco, Gordon Brisker, Mike Nock, Dale Barlow, Bill Motzing, Dave Panichi and Richard Toop.

His performance career has included work with musicians such as Oscar Noriega, Hilmar Jensson, Per Oddvar Johansen, Rune Nergaard, Samuel Jon Samuelsson (Sigur Ros), Sygtrygur Baldurson (Sugar Cubes) and many others.

Notable concert appearances include the Trondheim Jazz Festival, the Jazz Cafe in London, Acton Jazz Cafe in Boston, Moods in Zurich, Central Park Summer Stage in New York, Bennett’s Lane in Melbourne, The Reykjavik Jazz festival in Iceland, Groningen Festival in the Nederland, The Darwin Festival in Australia, the Sydney Opera House, and many other clubs and festivals in Europe, the United States, and the antipodes.

He has released five albums to date, the most recent of which, Naked Allies, is available now through Orenda Records in The United States.
