Huai Bao, a.k.a. H. B. Dhawa (a pen name used for his first two best-selling books), received his Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University in Canada. His substantial research is focused on gender and sexuality as intersected with a multitude of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences relating to China, East Asia, and other non-Western traditions.
Huai had worked in the film and TV industry internationally for years before settling into academia, with extensive experience, skills, and knowledge gained for his subsequent scholarly work.
Huai’s monograph, Cross-Gender China: Across Yin Yang, Across Cultures, and Beyond Jingju, was published by Routledge (New York, London and Oxfordshire) in August 2017. Since 2010, he has had three books, 16 refereed journal articles and book chapters published or accepted in the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia. He has also presented original research at top-class international conferences in North America, Europe, and Asia, and has been invited to host conferences as a keynote speaker and deliver public talks worldwide.
Since 2011, Huai Bao has taught at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and University of Waterloo. He not only has created new courses, developed curriculum, and served as a course advisor and consultant, but also has constructively participated in collegial and departmental activities under the supervision of the heads of the college. At UBC, he is instrumental in the registration, construction, and maintenance of the e-journal, Women Suffrage and Beyond.
