Research by particle physicists at Syracuse University has been featured in “The Innovation Platform,” which highlights the latest news from science, technology and politics. The article, “CERN, LHCb, Syracuse University and the Search for New Physics,” (page 46) explores some of the department’s recent discoveries in elementary particle research through the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). LHC is the world’s largest particle accelerator and the article examines how physicists from the College of Arts and Sciences are using its technology to make key breakthroughs, such as their observation of a new class of particles called “pentaquarks.” The report also explains how A&S physicists are participating in research, development and construction to upgrade LHCb’s detector technology, which could lead to dramatic changes in the ability to discover new phenomena about the smallest known elements of matter.
