SU Janklow student to intern at Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
Taylor Freitas '12, G'13 will work in the Development Department
This summer will be a homecoming of sorts for Syracuse University student Taylor Freitas ’12, G’13, who is returning to his native Rochester, N.Y., for an internship with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO). Freitas is a student in the Janklow Arts Leadership Program in The College of Arts and Sciences.
Freitas will intern in the RPO’s Development Department, where he will report to Vice President Kyle J. Polite. In this capacity, Freitas will support day-to-day fundraising activities that include database management and cleanup; gift processing and acknowledgements; donor mailings; and donor engagement events, such as the RPO’s 90th Anniversary Celebration on July 13, 2013. Also, he will attend departmental and committee meetings and will provide general administrative assistance.

Freitas, whose interests include arts management and consulting, nonprofit development, and jazz performance, is excited to return to Rochester. “I hope to cultivate my knowledge of and skills in nonprofit development,” says Freitas, who earned a bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance and in music history and culture from SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
As a member of the Janklow Program’s inaugural cohort, Freitas has focused nonprofit development—specifically, individual and corporate giving, institutional philanthropy, government funding, and in-kind support. “I believe the combination of my education, experience, and passion for the arts will allow me to contribute to the success of the RPO Development Department,” he says.
Freitas joins fellow Janklow students Noël O.C. Frodelius ’12, G’14; Caitlin Moriarty ’12, G’13; and Renee Storiale ’09, G’13, who are interning this summer at the Seattle Art Museum, Carnegie Hall, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, respectively.
The Janklow Program is a 15-month, 39-credit hour master’s program, designed to train leaders of non-profit and for-profit organizations in the creative and performing arts.
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been committed to enriching and inspiring our community through the art of music since its founding in 1922. The RPO presents up to 150 concerts a year, serving nearly 200,000 people through ticketed events, education and community engagement activities, and concerts in schools and community centers throughout the region. Notable former music directors include Eugene Goossens, José Iturbi, Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman, and Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman; Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik has earned a national reputation for excellence in pops programming during his 19-year tenure with the RPO. With Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair)—the first position of its kind in the country—the RPO reaches more than 12,000 children through its specific programs for school-aged children.
