Undergraduates Represent Syracuse in 2018 Putnam Competition

Yantao Wu, Xuerui Yang, and Jinyang Zhou represented Syracuse University in the Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 1, 2018. The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is the most prestigious mathematical contest for college students in the United States and Canada. In contrast to many standard textbook exercises, Putnam problems require creative thinking, which must be supported by a rigorous demonstration that the solution is correct. In 2018 there were 4623 contestants from 568 institutions. All three Syracuse University students placed in the top half of the participants.

Yantao Wu, Class of 2021

Yantao Wu

Yantao Wu is a double Mathematics and Physics major. He participated in the Putnam competition for the first time and placed in the top 15% of the contestants.

Xuerui Yang, Class of 2020

Xuerui Yang

Xuerui Yang is a Mathematics major who participated in the Putnam competition for the third time. He placed in the top 4% of the contestants. Xuerui is a recipient of several undergraduate awards from the Mathematics department and other University units.

Jinyang Zhou, Class of 2020

Jinyang Zhou

Jinyang Zhou is an Applied Mathematics major with a minor in Computer Science. He participated in the Putnam competition for the first time and placed in the top 50% of the contestants. He is a recent recipient of an undergraduate research award from Mathematics department.
