400 Hall of Languages

  • Degree: Began PhD program in 2017
  • Concentration: British Literature (19th-century)
  • Advisor: Harvey Teres (Director of Graduate Studies)

Lauren is a PhD student in 19th-century British literature. She is particularly interested in the work of Sir Walter Scott and the way he depicts gender roles in his novels and intends to further examine the role of female characters in novels, especially in those by Scott’s male contemporaries. She would also like to trace the influence of Scott’s representation of women on female Victorian novelists. George Eliot’s novels particularly interest Lauren as a place to extend her work as Eliot frequently references Scott, sometimes even drawing parallels between her narratives and his. Lauren is interested in the ways Scott’s representation of women and gender influenced Eliot’s work.
