Two years of in-depth study of Latin American, Spanish and U.S. Latino literatures, cultures, and linguistics allow students to develop expertise in critical reading, writing and thinking regarding a wide variety of areas. Our M.A. program offers students the foundations they need to continue with doctoral studies, assists them in connecting with current scholarly trends in the field, helps them gain advanced knowledge and critical skills that will expand their career opportunities in a global market, and provides them with teaching and research opportunities that can expand their international perspective.

A wide variety of course are taught by our faculty with a diversity of research and teaching interestes. All are both nationally and internationally recognized scholars in their fields and are passionate about contributing to the students' intellectual growth and academic success.

Outstanding applicants to the M.A. program in Spanish are offered Teaching Assistantships that provide valuable classroom experience to graduate students.

Students have the opportunity to obtain the Certificate in University Teaching through participation in the Future Professoriate Program as well as a PLACA Certificate in Advanced Studies (Program on Latin America & the Caribbean). The Certificate in University Teaching has allowed M.A. students to greatly develop their skills as university teachers and researchers that has opened up job opportunities, whereas the PLACA Certificate has given M.A. students confidence and competence in engaging Latin American and Latino cultures in their professional careers.

Students in the Spanish M.A. program also have the opportunity to do research in Spanish-speaking countries during the summer and expand their academic training by taking graduate courses while abroad. SU Abroad has outstanding programs in Madrid, Spain and Santiago, Chile that provide unique opportunities for students.

The Centro de Estudios Hispánicos, housed in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, can offer some financial support for students’ research and their participation in conferences.

Syracuse University Libraries have significant holdings, including strong Spanish and Latin American collections. The Special Collections Research Center, which is part of Syracuse University Libraries, also offers a number of materials related to Spanish and Latin American studies.

Our graduates from the M.A. program have continued on to Ph.D. programs at highly ranked universities such as UCLA, Cornell, Rutgers University, Western Michigan University, The Univerisity of Wisconsin-Madison and The University of Kansas.
