B.S. / M.S. in Biotechnology

Combine two programs into one to earn two degrees in just five years. Our accelerated B.S./M.S. program prepares students for jobs in areas such as the biotechnology industry, biomedical studies, health professions, pharmaceutical and agricultural industry, environmental biotechnology and research in academia.

Students receive the bachelor's degree after four years and the master's after the fifth year.

Combined B.S./M.S. in Biotechnology Admission Procedures

Incoming Undergraduate students admitted to the major B.S. in Biotechnology according to the normal procedure for that major are eligible for direct admission to the B.S./M.S. in Biotechnology program. The Syracuse University Undergraduate Admissions Office directs the processing of admissions for the entire university, including all undergraduate applications. Current SU students majoring in Biotechnology should submit an internal application packet to the B.S./M.S. Biotechnology Admissions Committee. The packet should be sent by email to biotech@syr.edu. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis up until January 15th of the student’s fourth year as an undergraduate.

The internal application packet for students majoring in Biotechnology should include the following:

  • The applicant’s CV or resume;
  • B.S. in Biotechnology Checklist form, filled out up to the current date;
  • Unofficial transcript;
  • Two (2) faculty recommendation letters, emailed directly from faculty or an internship supervisor to biotech@syr.edu.

Current SU students not majoring in Biotechnology (including biology, biochemistry, chemistry or others) should submit an internal application packet to the B.S./M.S. Biotechnology Admissions Committee. The packet should be sent by email to biotech@syr.edu. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis up until January 15th of the student’s third year as an undergraduate.

The internal application packet for students not majoring in Biotechnology should include the following:

  • The applicant’s personal statement (one page, in 12-point Times New Roman) outlining their interest in the five-year B.S./M.S. in Biotechnology program;
  • The applicant’s CV or resume;
  • B.S. in Biotechnology Checklist form, filled out up to the current date;
  • Unofficial transcript;
  • Two (2) faculty recommendation letters, submitted directly from faculty to the B.S./M.S. in Biotechnology Admissions Committee at biotech@syr.edu.

Program Requirements

Streamlined curriculum allows students to complete all the requirements for a B.S. in Biotechnology (see Course Catalog) and M.S. in Biotechnology in 5 years.

Students accepted into the five-year B.S./M.S. program will be able share up to 15 credits of 500- or 600-level coursework toward the completion of both degrees.
