Advanced Degree Planning

While A&S| Maxwell students often begin working full-time immediately following graduation, many continue their education in graduate school after earning their bachelor’s degree. If you are considering this option, a 4+1 program might be the right fit.

By enrolling in a 4+1 program during your time at Syracuse, you will pursue a total of five years of coursework and graduate with both your bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The bachelor’s degree is awarded after the fourth year and the master’s degree is awarded after the fifth year of study. A typical master’s degree would require four years of undergraduate study followed by two years of graduate study; the 4+1 accelerated timeline saves our students time and tuition dollars as they work toward their academic goals.

Applied Statistics 4+1 Program

Students who are earning their B.A. or B.S. in mathematics or applied mathematics can combine their bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree in applied statistics as a 4+1 program. This will provide students majoring in mathematics or applied mathematics with an interdisciplinary education and deeper understanding of statistics that is useful in many fields and applications.

Application timeline: Students may apply for this program after they have been admitted to the mathematics major and have successfully completed MAT 521: Introduction to Probability.

Biotechnology 4+1 Program

Through this program, students complete both a B.S. and M.S. in biotechnology in five years. This is made possible by allocating up to 12 credits of 500- or 600-level coursework toward both degrees. After completing this 4+1, which includes advanced scientific training and education and targeted professional development, students are prepared for jobs in the biotechnology industry, biomedical studies, health professions, pharmaceutical and agricultural industry, environmental biotechnology and research in academia.

Speech-Language Pathology 4+1 Program

Students majoring in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) may apply to the department’s 4+1 program, which combines Syracuse’s bachelor’s degree in CSD and master’s degree in speech-language pathology into a 5-year program. Syracuse is one of a small number of universities around the country that offers this unique opportunity to students. The program allows students to continue in graduate school with the strong mentoring connections established during their undergraduate education and graduate from a top-ranked program; Syracuse’s M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology is ranked in the top 12% of speech-language pathology programs nationwide and boasts an impressive employment rate of 97%.

Application timeline: Students may apply for this program during the spring semester of their junior year at Syracuse.

Economics 4+1 Program

Students who are earning their B.S. in Economics at Syracuse may apply for the Economics 4+1 program. The additional graduate-level work in economics will provide sought-after analytic and data skills and valuable academic credentials that will enhance their opportunities for future employment or continued graduate work.

Application timeline: Students typically apply for this program during the spring semester of their junior year at Syracuse. Students who arrive at Syracuse with substantial AP credit may be eligible to apply sooner.

International Relations 4+1 Program

Students majoring in anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, policy studies, political science or sociology may additionally pursue their M.A. in International Relations through a 4+1 program.

Application timeline: Students typically apply for the international relations 4+1 program during the spring semester of their junior year at Syracuse.

Public Administration 4+1 Program

Students majoring in anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, policy studies, political science or sociology may additionally pursue their M.P.A. in Public Administration through a 4+1 program. This allows Syracuse undergraduate students to secure their place for graduate study at Maxwell, which offers the nation’s top-ranked master’s program in public administration.

Application timeline: Students typically apply for the accelerated M.P.A. program during the spring semester of their junior year at Syracuse.

Newhouse 4+1 Program

Students who pursue any undergraduate degree in the College of Arts and Sciences | Maxwell School may additionally pursue a master’s degree in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications through a 4+1 program. They may select from nine master’s degree options: Advertising, MA; Arts Journalism and Communications, MA; Broadcast and Digital Journalism, MS; Magazine, News and Digital Journalism, MS; Media Studies, MA; Multimedia, Photography and Design, MS; New Media Management, MS; Public Relations, MS; Television, Radio and Film, MA. This allows Syracuse undergraduate students to secure their place for graduate study at one of the leading public communications schools in the country.

Application timeline: Students typically apply for the 4+1 after earning 60 college credits, or before January 15 of their senior year.
