Research Interests

My research focuses on the intersections between musical culture, performance, and technological mediation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In my current book project, I examine how the camera, telephone, and phonograph affected the world of French opera between 1870 and 1914. My other projects include a history of piano performance in the age of the player piano, as well as a study of how print culture shaped the London reception of one of the last great castratos, Giovanni Battista Velluti.
