    Biographical Information

Debora Ryan has worked in art museums for more than twenty years, most recently as Senior Curator of the Everson Museum of Art (2000-2013) in Syracuse, New York. She has been teaching Museum Studies courses at Syracuse University and Wells College since 2013.

Ryan earned an M.A. in Art History and a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Syracuse University (2017). Her dissertation, “A French Fort in the Salt City: Re-visioning Sainte Marie among the Iroquois,” examines the role museums play in constructing knowledge and public memory through a historical analysis of Sainte Marie among the Iroquois Living History Museum, a twentieth-century replica of a seventeenth-century Jesuit mission in Onondaga Territory. Ryan’s research focuses on museum history, theory, and practice, and the complexities of cross-cultural collaborations within the museum environment.
