George Saunders |
Professor
George Saunders G ’88 (English) was named a 2006 MacArthur
Fellow by The
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. In April, he
was appointed a Guggenheim Fellow. That same month saw publication
of In Persuasion Nation, his latest collection of stories.

Tewodros Asefa |
Professor
Tewodros (“Teddy”) Asefa (Chemistry) received
the National Science
Foundation’s prestigious CAREER Award to support his
research in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Asefa’s award
constitutes a two-year streak, begun by Britton
Plourde (Physics), who co-authored an article in the December
issue of Science magazine.
Seniors Iwana’ N. Duck (Policy
Studies/Psychology), Patricia Duprey (Psychology),
and Stephanie G. Tornatore (Psychology) were
selected as College Marshalls. All three will lead the academic
procession at Commencement.

Jacqueline Gallagher
‘07 (Anthropology) is one of six students receiving
the Coluccio
Salutati Award, recognizing academic achievement through a
deep understanding of Italian culture.
David
Potter, associate dean for Student Services, made two appointments
in the Office of Academic Advising and Counseling Services: Shruti
Amin Viswanathan ’01 was named as associate director,
and Diana Ecker will serve as a counselor. Potter also named Francesco
Riverso G’05 as new College Recorder in the Student
Records Office.

Recent guests to campus include renowned primatologist
Jane Goodall,
who delivered our Laura
J. Hanhausen Milton First Year Lecture, and acclaimed author
Joyce
Carol Oates ’60, H’00, who met with creative writing
students before speaking downtown as part of the Rosamond
Gifford Lecture Series.
