Life Sciences Complex

Growing New Homes for the Sciences, Humanities

Two of our biggest campaign priorities—the construction of the Life Sciences Complex and the renovation of the historic Tolley Building—are becoming a reality.

Only hours before we re-dedicated the Tolley Building in October, the first steel beams of the Life Sciences Complex were erected. Construction has since kept apace, with the mounting of more structural steel and installation of temporary heating systems and scaffolding to facilitate work during the winter months.

“For more than five years, we have been designing a building that will energize, serve, and inspire new generations of life sciences students, teachers, and researchers,” says Eric Schiff, associate dean for sciences/mathematics. “We are now less than two years away from seeing the realization of this dream.” To monitor construction, visit our webcam at lifesciences.syr.edu/multimedia.html.

After two years of renovations, Tolley
re-opens in January. The century-old landmark houses SU’s new Center for the Public and Collaborative Humanities; the Imagining America national consortium for public scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design; and space for Judaic, Latino-Latin American, LGBT, and Native American studies, as well as the Religion and Society Program.

Hundreds turned out for the Tolley re-dedication, which was part of Homecoming Weekend’s “Celebration of the Humanities.” The celebration included a symposium, moderated by Renée Crown University Honors Program Director Samuel Gorovitz, and an outdoor ceremony. A webcast of the latter is available at http://emc3.syr.edu/A_S_Dedication.asx.
