Creativity, Innovation Permeate Campaign Launch

Hundreds of friends and alumni returned to campus on November 2 for the spirited launch of The Campaign for Syracuse University. Among the highlights of the daylong program was a panel discussion on creativity and innovation.

Cathryn Newton and interim engineering dean Shiu-Kai Chin moderated a lively discussion with Mark Reed ’77, G’79 G’83 of Yale University; Martin Gellert of the National Institutes of Health; and Keisuke Yawata G’63 of International Angels Investors.

Special focus was given to the need to support enhanced creativity among undergraduate and graduate researchers at SU. “Many alumni cite such critical creative experiences as writing a senior thesis or completing a capstone project as crucial to their later success,” says honors program director Samuel Gorovitz, who participated in the discussion. “The new Life Sciences Complex, which includes laboratories for 150 undergraduate researchers, is but one example of how we will expand the capacity to foster these experiences.”

Of the $529 million already committed toward the campaign’s $1 billion goal, tens of millions have been raised by The College for scholarships and fellowships, new and improved facilities, endowed centers and programs, and other College priorities.
