Graduate Program in Interdisciplinary Linguistic Studies

This program provides the student with intensive and advanced education in linguistics and language-related study. The student works under the guidance of a supervisory committee in one of several concentration areas:

  1. teaching English as a second language;
  2. linguistic theory;
  3. logic and language;
  4. language acquisition;
  5. language, culture, and society;
  6. information representation and retrieval.

To a large extent, programs are tailored to the needs of the individual student.

Program Requirements

The M.A. degree requires 30 credits of graduate coursework in a concentration area as approved by the supervisory committee for that area. A thesis may be substituted for six credits of coursework with the approval of the committee. A comprehensive written examination on the material covered in coursework is required. Students submitting a thesis will be orally examined on it.
