Advising Services

We welcome, support, and challenge all students in the College of Arts and Sciences to realize their fullest intellectual and personal potential. While all students are capable, active agents of their own development, we are here to assist students in defining and creating their academic pursuits and extracurricular activities to maximize their undergraduate experience and pave the way for long-term career success.

Our Services

Student-Centered Advising

Our College Advisors offer individualized, student-centered academic counseling with all students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. We assist students in creating the most optimal academic plan to reach their learning objectives during their undergraduate careers as well as develop and hone required skills and knowledge in pursuit of their career aspirations. In addition to offering advising services, we help students develop a support network through our collaboration with other campus-wide resources.

Guidance through Degree Completion

Our College Advisors are available throughout every stage of a student's undergraduate career.  We meet individually with students to assist with the creation and development of academic plans and provide additional support. Students should meet with a College Advisor at least once per semester to review their progress toward their Liberal Arts Core requirements and review their current progress toward degree completion.

Academic Counseling

Our professional staff is available to meet with students by appointment and during walk-in hours throughout the academic year.  We help students understand the purpose of a liberal arts education and counsel students during the course of their academic careers. Areas of expertise include helping students to:

  • Understand the Liberal Arts Core;
  • Select courses, majors, and minors;
  • Develop time management skills;
  • Map strategies to improve academic performance;
  • Identify academic enrichment opportunities;
  • Maintain steady progress toward degree completion;
  • Plan for graduate school, professional school, or entry into the job market.

Students are assigned an individual College Advisor who will work with them throughout their college career. College Advisors help students transition to college, discuss course selection and class schedules, and provide insights about the academic experience in the College of Arts and Sciences and opportunities available at Syracuse University. After students declare a major, typically during their first or second year, they are assigned a faculty advisor within the department or interdisciplinary program they are pursuing. These faculty advisors additionally work with students through graduation regarding their major interests and post-graduation planning. We recommend that all students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences visit our offices in 323 Hall of Languages to see a College Advisor at least once per semester throughout their academic careers to receive all fully available advising services, including a thorough review of progress toward degree completion each step of the way.

Student Records Specialists

Our Student Records Specialists assist students by:

  • Maintaining academic records, which are private and only accessible to students, records specialists, advsiors and academic counselors;
  • Processing petitions and academic forms; and
  • Certifying degree completion for students pending graduation.

It is the student's responsibility to confirm the fact that he or she will satisfy degree requirements. When you have any questions or concerns about your outstanding degree requirements, we encourage you to visit us and consult with our academic counselors, who work collaboratively with the records specialists and office coordinators in our offices in 323 Hall of Languages.
