Dean's Message

portrait of Dean Ruhlandt

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences, the intellectual and academic core of Syracuse University! Home to more than one-third of all SU students, the College houses nearly two dozen departments and three dozen interdisciplinary programs in the sciences, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences (via the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs). The oldest and largest academic unit on campus, the College is nationally known for its interdisciplinary teaching, research, service, and enterprise. The members of the faculty are passionate educators that combine their love of teaching with a passion for research and their quest to reveal the unknown.

A liberal arts education will help you reach your full potential by receiving an education that is based on the principles of critical thinking, effective communication, and the analysis and understanding of data. Your experience with the College will prepare you to assume your leadership role in society, just as today’s leaders derive strength from their liberal arts education.

Should you choose the College, you will study subjects that are familiar as well as those that are new to you.  Collectively, the courses you will experience will enable you to appreciate the diversity and richness of the peoples, cultures, and natural processes in the world around you. It is the exposure to many different subjects that empower our students to make a difference.  Daily, our students are accomplishing incredible things and leading change; all their actions are rooted in their Arts and Sciences education. You too can be a part of that change!

Today’s economic climate demands that college graduates are nimble, eager, and prepared. A degree from the College not only allows our alumni to meet the challenges of the ‘real-world’ but exceed expectations and rise through the ranks of academia, corporate America, the non-profit world, and a variety of other fields and industries.

No two paths are the same. And, no two students’ dreams and aspirations are identical. Armed with an education from the College, our students can succeed and excel as they walk down their own unique path.

I encourage you to read on to explore how the College of Arts and Sciences may help you prepare for life after college.
